The mat looms

Reeds, a wooden loom, and an afternoon.

Quảng Nam has woven sedge mats for around five hundred years, and Triêm Tây is one of the handful of villages the province still counts as a weaving village. It is a fragile list to be on. Nearby An Phước lost its certificate when the last weavers stopped — the rush beds shrinking under new roads, the river turning salt, a day at the loom paying less than a coffee. Ours still weave. Sit down and they will teach you.

  1. 01

    Cut

Sedge is cut by hand with a sickle from the marshy ground along the river.

  2. 02

    Split and dry

Each stem is split lengthways and laid in the sun until it pales to straw.

  3. 03

    Dye

Bundles go into pots of hot dye — red, yellow, purple, green — then back out to dry.

04

Weave

Two to a loom: one slides each reed through on a long needle, the other beats the frame down to lock it.

This is the part you do — the looms are a few minutes' walk from your room.

A mat takes an afternoon, four hands, and someone willing to learn the pattern.
